Drag Me to Hell … A great project to work on for Sam Raimi. We ended up animating most all of the Evil Hanky (one of the main characters) in the feature DRAG ME TO HELL. We started with just 7 shots but ended up replacing the practical puppet shot’s which they’d shot twice in some cases because Sam Raimi felt our CG hanky looked more real that the real one.
The beginning of the second series of shots shows the original plate in which the actress is miming which then wipes to the finished shot. And the third shows the plate and the shot running concurrently.
And finally there was to have been a shot by the side of a car driven by Alison Lohman, trying to outrun the hanky which was outside the car chasing her. Sam Raimi asked if I could make it look like the Hanky was trying to swim to catch up. I did it and he couldn’t stop laughing at it which may be why it was never used. It was too funny. He asked the editor to just keep playing it over and over until his editor told him “Enough”. At which time Sam massaged the editor’s neck and “Just one more time?” Luv it! Here the swimming hanky below.
