Complete In-House development, from first designs to final print.
Over the 26 years we've been creating animations and visual effects for film and TV, we've come to love shorts. Firstly there are some great short scripts being generated these days. Secondly they are so much more affordable than full length features and can get tremendous visibility through social media or by being entered into the many film festivals around the world. And finally we get to do the whole short and nothing but the short. So here then are two of our completed shorts and one work in progress.
A short film we animated for Long Way Home Productions out of New York. The characters and sets were designed and built from scratch. A massive thanks too, to Richard Nicklaus and Kim Nicklaus who scored this short movie, including the hauntingly beautiful main theme.
The story tells how out two young protagonists, Owen and his younger sister Erin, encounter the Loch Ness monster and are transported to a world of mythical creatures - MYTHATANIA.
We worked with very limited story-boards and suggested changes to the story which increased the urgency, pumped up the action sequences for faster pacing and added comedy, for example the visual comedy touches, when Owen and Erin encounter "the bullies" but manage to escape.
We also designed and built the main group of Mythical characters who would become a major part of the continuing story. They would befriend, and help the kids when they reached the mythical world of MYTHATANIA.
The complete 15 minute short, created to show the quality we could deliver to the Producers and then the Funders who within 3 months had signed on to make a feature version.
The Story: HUGGINS, a musically gifted young bunny arrives on his first day at GREAT POND MUSIC ACADEMY in the FOURTH WORLD, and encounters NETTY, his Housemother, WURZEL, the Master's Valet and finally the rude, obnoxious MASTER, Headmaster of the Academy, who immediately feels threatened by Huggins and will try to thwart his ambitions. But in the end it is his last visitor, a surprising new Director of the Academy, who will recognize his talent and shape Huggins’ future.
Here are two shorter clips which introduce 4 of the 5 main characters.
Having been shown his lodgings by Housemother Netty, Huggins starts to write his first piano piece for the school, which will be vetted by the MASTER. While doing so he meets Netty's surprising love interest - WURZEL. a hairy toad - who is treated like a skivvy by the Master, even having to announce the Master's arrival anywhere by playing, or attempting to play, a bugle fanfare.
Huggins writes a simple but beautiful piece of music as his first piece. The Master is deeply touched by it, but does not want to show it to Huggins. And so he strives to find a problem with the piece, eventually deciding it doesn't have enough notes. Huggins wants to understand why and the Master, who is not a quick thinker, has a hard time explaining.
And one final character, a favorite for many viewers, who makes his entrance only at the very end of the story. He is Balthazar, the greatest composer in the Fourth World and Huggins' hero, who unknown to Huggins, has become the Director of his school.
Inspired by the Mike Gordon's beautifully illustrated children's books, which have sold up to half a million copies each. We are working with Mike to recreate characters based on his wonderful illustrations, and are developing the pilot.
We are looking to find backing to bring this award winning international artist's short stories to the screen as an 8 episode x 10 minutes series. The series follows the adventures of a brother and sister ... BIRDIE and her little brother Bo. From spaceship attempted take-offs to underwater trips to of course the blue butterfly. If you'd like to be involved, contact us for more information. One of the episode's script ... THE BLUE BUTTERFLY ... on the link below.
The sample animation was the first test-outing for these characters, and was wonderfully voiced by Perry Norton (http://perrynorton.com/),
Meet Birdie, BO and Bingo, their pretty smart hound as we are working on designing more of the characters we'll need for the 8 part series, as well as their world, which will include plenty props as they embark of silly fantasy adventures.
Below is the pilot episode script, which you can download. This is for your review only.
While Birdie and Bo are searching for tadpoles to catch in a little woodland pond, they get a big surprise ... a big YELLOW surprise and meet, CAPTAIN COD, a Sub-Pilot from Scotland who somehow manages to surface in their little pond, while "trying to find America". They'll get an unexpected lift home in "SUBBY", who is powered by a poorly hacked, and thus argumentative, version of Alexa!
Here's a first test of Subby
